A shopper types "find me a waterproof hiking jacket under 150 euros that ships by Friday" into ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot, and the assistant does the searching, comparing and, increasingly, the checkout. That is agentic commerce: AI agents acting as the shopper's buyer. This guide explains what is actually live in October 2026 (several early announcements have changed), and gives a practical checklist to make your store agent-ready, whatever platform it runs on.
What is agentic commerce?
In ordinary e-commerce a person searches, compares and checks out. In agentic commerce an AI agent does some or all of that for them: it reads product data from many stores, weighs options against the shopper's request, and either hands the shopper a short list, sends them to your checkout, or completes the purchase with stored payment details and the shopper's approval.
For a merchant this means a second audience. Your website still has to convince a person, but the agent decides which products the person sees at all. Agents read structured data, policies and availability; they do not care about your hero banner.

OpenAI explained its change of course plainly: "the initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide, so we're allowing merchants to use their own checkout experiences while we focus our efforts on product discovery." The lesson for merchants: protocols and checkouts will keep shifting, while the work on your product data and policies carries over to every channel.
McKinsey estimates agentic commerce could orchestrate up to $1 trillion in US retail revenue by 2030 and $3–5 trillion globally (as reported by Digital Commerce 360). Treat it as direction, not a forecast for your store.
How to make your store agent-ready: the checklist
These six groups apply whatever platform you run. Tick them off as you go; the list is saved in your browser.
1. Product data
2. Policies an agent can read
3. Feeds and channels
4. Checkout and handover
5. Access for AI crawlers and agents
6. Measurement
Groups 1, 2 and 5 overlap heavily with AI search visibility. If you have not looked at it yet, start with what GEO is and how AI search picks sources.
Platform by platform
Shopify
Shopify has the shortest path. "Agentic Storefronts is active by default for eligible stores", reaching ChatGPT, Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search, the Gemini app and Meta from the Shopify admin. To qualify, Shopify lists "a paid plan, an unlocked storefront, and completed store policies (terms of service, privacy, and return and refund)", and every product needs "a title, at least one image, a price, and shipping to the US or Canada". For custom experiences, Shopify also offers UCP-compliant MCP servers for cart, checkout and orders.
Odoo, WooCommerce and other platforms
Without a built-in agentic channel, you have three routes, and they combine:
- Feeds: Google Merchant Center and, where available to you, ChatGPT's merchant programme. This covers discovery.
- The Shopify Agentic Plan, which, per Shopify, "lets brands on any ecommerce platform … list products in Shopify Catalog" with "no monthly fee".
- Your own MCP server over the store or ERP (for Odoo, the sales, stock and pricing modules), so assistants can check availability, build a cart or look up an order under the customer's login. See what an MCP server is.
Headless stores (Payload, Umbraco, custom)
A headless stack is well placed: product data already lives in structured content and the API exists. Agent readiness here is mostly adding a scoped MCP server in front of the commerce API, generating clean feeds from the CMS, and keeping structured data on product pages consistent with both.
What if you sell outside the US?
Most in-chat checkout today starts with US merchants and US shoppers. In markets such as Turkey and Romania the agentic checkout channels mostly have not opened yet, but assistants already recommend products and send traffic. That makes the groundwork the same everywhere: product data, readable policies, crawler access and measurement. When checkout channels open in your market, a store that already passes this checklist is ready on day one.
Frequently asked questions
What is agentic commerce?
Shopping in which an AI agent finds, compares and sometimes buys products on a shopper's behalf, inside assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot or Google's AI Mode, usually with the shopper approving the final purchase.
What is an example of agentic commerce?
A shopper asks an assistant for running shoes in their size under a set price. The assistant searches several stores, shows three options and, on approval, sends the shopper to the store's checkout with the right size in the cart, or completes the purchase where in-chat checkout is available.
Is ChatGPT Instant Checkout still available?
OpenAI changed course in March 2026: it now lets merchants use their own checkout while it focuses on product discovery through the Agentic Commerce Protocol. Check OpenAI's merchant documentation for the current options in your market.
What is the difference between ACP, UCP and AP2?
ACP is OpenAI and Stripe's protocol, now focused on product feeds and discovery in ChatGPT. UCP is Google's open standard covering the journey from discovery to post-purchase, co-developed with large retailers and Shopify. AP2 is Google's protocol for proving that a shopper authorised an agent's payment.
How do I make my store visible to AI agents?
Complete product data, published policies, an approved Merchant Center feed, product pages that render without JavaScript, crawler access to product pages and, on Shopify, eligibility for Agentic Storefronts. Use the checklist above.
Is agentic commerce safe for merchants?
The main risks are fraud on agent-initiated payments and disputes over what the shopper authorised. Protocols such as AP2 and the card networks' agent programmes exist to address this. Keep checkout and accounts authenticated and log orders by channel.
What is agentic ad buying?
A related idea in advertising: AI agents that plan, buy and optimise media on an advertiser's behalf within set budgets and rules. It is separate from agentic commerce, where the agent buys products for a shopper.
